Stationary Compost Bins – as the name suggests, these are basically holding units where you deposit your organic waste. You can use a tool to mix the composting material from time to time.  This lineup includes the Compost Machine, Soil Saver, FeelGood Composter, Compost Converter.  For those looking for a wooden compost bin, there is the 90 gallon wooden Eco-Composter.   We also offer the Earthmaker and the Aerobin 400 which are designed for high capacity and easy access to the compost.  Lastly, most of these bins can only accept food scraps, except the Green Johanna hot composter, which can break down materials including raw meat, dairy and bread.

Once installed the system can reduce your garbage by about20% and help reduce garbage odors.  Furthermore, the system could reduce water usage since it can handle waste normally thrown into garbage disposal systems.  Once installed the Green Cone is  easy to use, and the manufacturer recommends cleaning only once a year!

The 71 Gallon EComposter is a popular choice for garden composters. But what if you need something a bit more compact?  The Compospin is here! • Jump start a new compost pile with blood meal, cottonseed meal, well-aged manure.  They are rich in nitrogen and help “fire-up” the microbes responsible for breaking down organic matter into compost.

• The use of activators can get slow compost heated up faster. We recommend the BioWish Compost Boost.

• Establish a composting bucket (or Caddy) in your kitchen. This will help limit the number of trips needed to the EComposter.  You can find several buckets in our composting supplies section.

• Use equal parts by volume of dry and green plant materials in the overall mix. When adding layers of fine green plant wastes such as grass clippings make sure you mix it with other material properly.  Grass mats easily and prevents water from moving through the mass.

• Always make sure you leave enough empty space inside the Eco-Composter to allow the material to mix.

• Do not compost plants or materials that have been treated with non organic pesticides.

• Turn the EComposter once a day. This will help introduce oxygen and speed up the composting process.

• Keep the EComposter in the sun.  Microbes that help break down the waste are more active when warm.

• Plants lose between 50 and 75 percent of their volume in composting, so a lot of plant material can be processed effectively.

• When choosing a location for your EcoComposter you will want to locate a spot with good airflow and partial shade in the summer (to keep the Eco-Composter from getting too hot).  However, increase exposure to the sun in the winter (to keep the Eco-Composter hot).

Q:  I’m thinking about getting a worm bin, how many worms should I start with?
A:  There is no absolute answer to this question. The starting quantity depends on whether you want to jump start right into composting materials.  Or to spend the first few months growing worms. The less worms you start with, the less material that you can compost. On the flipside, the more worms you have (meaning a full house) the less multiplying the worms will do. Quite a dynamic equation.

Q.  Will I get too many worms?
A.  No, you can never have too many worms. They will regulate their population to the confines of
available space and the amount of food you give them. Worm concentration should reach capacity (about 15,000 to 20,000 worms) after 2 – 5 years.

Q:  How much will my worms eat?
A: This depends on how many worms you have. Worms can eat up to half their own body weight every day and can double their population every few months. If you start your worm compost with 1 pound/450 grams of mature worms (identify mature worms by a distinct ring shaped swelling around their body) they will consume up to half a pound /225 grams of food waste per day. After a few months you should have double your worm population and you can feed
them more. The baby worms, however, won’t eat much and will take about 3 months to mature.

Q.  What shouldn’t I feed my worms?
A.  Be careful what you feed your worms particularly if you are unaware of its source. Manures, for example, from horses, cattle or dogs often has vermicides still active in it that were designed to kill parasitic worms in the animal. They can kill all your worms in one day. If you use animal manures make sure you know when worming is conducted and avoid using the manure for a few weeks.

Feeding worms bread is also not advised.  The yeast is still alive no matter the age of the
bread.  Yeast loves to live inside worms and will multiply actively, thus killing the worms.

Q. Will my worm bin smell?
A. The only smell associated with a well maintained worm farm is a pleasant rainforest
odour. If your worm bin has an offensive smell, it is an indication that anaerobic bacteria have built up in the system in uneaten food wastes. Stop feeding the worms and stir the wastes in the top tray lightly with a garden fork adding lime mix (not garden lime as it is too strong) as well. This aerates the organic material and allows worms to move through it more easily. Repeat this
aeration procedure regularly to prevent recurrence. Start feeding again when all smells are gone
